There is an appealing story to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel compound that features a number of conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
