There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of most borders.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, features 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel complex that highlights a number of comforts on top of the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
