There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat casino, highlights 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel building that features many conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 table games.
